BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra | John Wilson | Sir Richard Rodney Bennett - Orchestral Works, Vol.5
Pre-order and save 👉 lnk.to/CHSA5266ID
ALBUM OUT 14TH FEBRUARY 2025 🎶
John Wilson’s series of orchestral works by his mentor and friend Sir Richard Rodney Bennett reaches Volume 5, featuring three works composed between 1973 and 1989.
The Concerto for Orchestra was commissioned at the instigation of Brian Priestman, the British chief conductor of the Denver Symphony Orchestra. Its three-movement structure, closing with a dazzling set of variations, displays the modern orchestra as a virtuoso body of players.
His rarely performed cello concerto Sonnets to Orpheus forms the centrepiece of the programme. Originally commissioned by the Edinburgh International Festival, and premièred by Heinrich Schiff, it was written at a crisis-point in the composer’s life, as Bennett split with his partner and left the UK for New York, where he would spend the rest of his life.
This recording features the internationally acclaimed Norwegian cellist Jonathan Aasgaard, principal cello of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and Sinfonia of London, and tutor of cello at London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
Diversions was a commission from the Haberdashers’ Aske’s Schools, in north London, to celebrate their tercentenary, in 1990. It was first played by the combined orchestras of all seven schools at a celebratory concert in the Royal Festival Hall and the finished work is an exuberantly colourful set of symphonic variations on the Scottish folksong ‘Whistle and I’ll come to you, my lad’.

Doric String Quartet, Beethoven: Complete String Quartets Vol. 1
Dear John Wilson. Thank you for recording so much British music.
I've worked with a lot of violinists in my time, but I've never been so drawn to the sound of the actual instrument they're playing as here. This violin sings throughout its register so EVENLY - the same qualities one looks for in a top singer. I'm stunned. Never heard anything like it, but of course all due kudos to the marvellous performer playing on it. I just wonder how far her very tight bow affects this - it would certainly be wonderful to know how tight Paganini kept his own... What a pity pianos don't last as long as violins. I've seen and heard Liszt's pianos, but they are tired, and make it very difficult to imagine the extraordinary sound he drew out of them.
Wow. Speechless.
Like a rush of a thousand colors, dreamily beautiful - Bravo!👏
Extraordinario.
Now let's see... I csme in, set my keys in the jar, and then ,umm ... Now where did I put that thing? I know it'd here somewhere.... Uhh ...
Father: Italian. Mother: Jewish-American.
A beauty.
Beautiful.
I love his playing, but his outfit… it is even more fantastic than his amazing breath control. I love it!
OK, I'm sold. I need this CD. She makes that violin sing like few violinists ever do with any violin. The joy of her lifelong dream coming true, in a way so much grander than she could have ever imagined, seeps through every moment of this interview. I've never heard of this lady before today, but I very much admire her musicianship and joyful spirit. I realize this is basically a commercial, but.....THANK YOU!
What an amazing performance. The best. Not only is the perfection of the quality of voice unassailable, her every piece of arsenal from her vocal skills is astounding: perfect pitch, divine legato and phrasing and that clear clear diction including every consonant ending a word, clear and unobtrusive. I love you!!! Better even than Renee and that's saying something...
Wonderful video, Ken! Bravo and kudos for this extraordinary achievement!
Un mot ...bravo..!
Beautiful tone there, Francesca.
My heart hurts when the poor violin gets its strings replaced... Isn't that hard to use plain gut?
Of course. And this video inspired me to immediately purchase the recording.

Brilliant, enjoy the album! 🥳
I love meeting new (to me) artists through your wonderful videos, and the gorgeous performances accompanying them.
We are delighted that we can share these talented musicians with you! Thank you, Steven.
Very beautifully sung Francesca!
Beautiful.
Absolutely stellar! One of the very best renditions of this piece I have heard.
Nice
Incredible recording all round. Bravi tutti!
This horse has been ridden by way too many people for too long, think of how the horse would feel. Also, it's 1% violin and 99% the musician, so stop unnecessarily idolizing and fixating on one thing.
What a talented beauty this lady is! She was wonderful playing Maria in the UK Sound of Music Prom! ❤🇬🇧❤
Il miglior interprete di Debussy. Tocco e pedale fenomenali 😍
Love this woman
"Excellent composition and very beautiful performance."
Good to see the Busoni concerto getting attention- it alone should be worth the price of admission! Thanks to Ms. Dego for her advocacy.
Thanks for this Nicholas! Yesterday’s session found me frantically moving the mike (Rode Ntk) around to minimize key clacking, particularly as I was multitracking oboes 1.2.3. Your instrument didn’t have that issue. Also you record in a very live room. Please comment on this choice. Thanks!
Masterpiece
Wonderful!
It would be lovely if John Wilson and the Sinfonia of London recorded Alfredo Casella's orchestrations for Balakirev's Islamey and J.S. Bach's Chaconne BWV1004. Casella's orchestration for Mily Balakirev's Islamey, is an orchestral tour de force - it will surely stretch the orchestra to the limit. There is astonishing volume per page, at least one page requires 30 staves, there is textural complexity, divisi strings, tutti passages that demand considerable instrumentation, but there are also passages full of colour and delicacy with subtle and fine instrumental soli emitting mesmerising melodic writing. On the other hand, Casella brought a lot of inventiveness and boldness to bear, when doing his orchestral transcription for Bach's Chaconne. He kept Bach's original violin, but simultaneously, he brought to the fore all the polyphonic and contrapuntal substratum that exists in latent form (in the original violin work).
I studied with you at IU in 1997-1998. Nice video!
Stunning music under the baton of a great conductor. Greatly looking forward to hearing the full work.
Merci à vous, Monsieur Bavouzet, de vous faire le porte-drapeau de notre culture nationale.
Fabulous.
What beautiful performances. Thank you for the alert!
Wonderful.
Beautiful work! 🙂
Sounds dazzling, Ken! Bravo!
Sensational, exciting
she’s a knockout. So pretty.
It's Fannie Hurst not Patty Hearst. Listen carefully - it's not that hard. Pure genius from the master.
Great performance.
